NEFIN was formed in 1991 as an autonomous and politically non-partisan, national level umbrella organisation of indigenous peoples/ nationalities. NEFIN currently consists of  48 indigenous member organisations widely distributed across Nepal.   NEFIN is a member of the United Nation's Working Group on Indigenous Populations.
